Pownce - Innovation or mashup?
Mashup. More mashed than the potatoes I had with my chicken schnitzel last night. Damn, that was good schnitzel.
In case you're wondering "What the hell?", Pownce is the new product that Leah Culver, Kevin Rose, Daniel Burka and Shawn Allen were rumoured working on. Some thought it was an IM competitor, but they were wrong. Run by their new startup "Megatechtronium" (lol), Pownce is a cross between Twitter + Pando (I'm not sure how the file transfer works, I'm sure it's not p2p like Pando, but it's a similar concept). Read the website for more details on how it works.
So what do I think of Pownce... Well, I don't think it's going to revolutionize anything, which is what I was expecting when I heard the rumours months ago. Like I said, it's not a new concept, and the old concepts that spawned Pownce have been met with low circulation, not finding wide use. It's pretty much like Twitter with the ability to send files, but I can already use Twitter, and I can just email files, so I don't think Pownce is really hitting any niches.
That said, Leah's a talented Django dev, Kevin's ideas powered Digg to success, and Daniel Burka's SilverOrange does amazing things, so I'm totally eager to test Pownce out. I think that if anybody can make this concept work, it's these guys. If I manage to score an invite, I'll let you know with a review of the features.
